Hello my name is Amy Northrop! I did daily peritoneal dialysis for 8-10 hrs a night for five years. Recently peritoneal dialysis stopped working so I had to have a catheter placed in my chest and begin hemodialysis. I was trained to do it at home and started home hemodialysis in April of this year. It’s been incredibly challenging and I’ve had five surgeries and four hospitalizations since.
I love spending time with my family, friends and my fur babies. I really enjoy cooking, baking, crafting, photography and gardening. I’ve been helping provide weekly meals for food insecure families since May 2020.
Doing dialysis every day makes traveling to visit family and friends very difficult. Anemia and dialysis makes me overly tired— more exhausted than I can describe. Fatigue that sleep doesn’t fix. This makes it really challenging to do the things I take great pleasure in— like being with family, walking my dogs, and doing hobbies.
A transplant would mean better health and more energy. It would mean freedom from my machine and my home. It would give me the ability to do more of the things I love and enable me to travel to visit family and friends.
I’m looking for a living donor. I’d like to encourage everyone to share my story to help me find a living donor. I’ve been on the transplant list for almost six years. In order to be listed as active there are many many hoops you have to jump through. I really hope that soon my match will be found so I can return to a normal life and be freed from my machine.
