Hi there,
My name is Patrik and in October I was diagnosed with Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease after going to ER due to severe hepatic encephalopathy symptoms.
Primarily, I enjoy walking in our local Connecticut State Parks; Hammonasset Beach, Haddam Meadows, or around Cedar Lake here in Chester, CT. Also, enjoy our two English Cream Golden Retrievers, Bonnie and Clyde, boating, canoeing, driving (CAR), photography as well as gardening & yardwork on our lush property.
My wife of 32 years, Ruth, and I are celebrating 33 years of wedded bliss on August 7 and we are hoping to go to Mystic for some relaxation and fun. I take life and this condition in stride and my sense of humor is thoughtful, dry and at times a bit macabre. The plan is to live a long life, there is so much I have yet to see and do.
Primarily, for me, the disease shows as encephalopathy where I have episodes of confusion and lack of memory as well as being unsteady on my feet, among other symptoms. I take medications for this but it can still happen at any time and without warning signs. I am not driving at this moment, nor am I taking the boat out, In fact, it has been up for sale since this spring. I do my daily walks and light gardening.
Since the disease is irreversible a transplant would mean life! A full life where I can go back to being my normal self. I would also be employable which in my current status, I am not. In January of this year, I was laid off after 32+ years and now I am not employable because of my condition.
I continue my walks to be in as good a shape I can be to handle the surgery and its aftermath in recovery.
I would be really happy if we can all spread the word about my story with the hope that someone at some point would like to become a living donor.
The donation process can be started confidentially at Yale New Haven Center for Living Donors 866-925-3897.
Again kindly spread the word! The more people that see my story, the better.
