What motivated you to donate?
Everyone has a different motivation for their donation. For me, it was the deeply-held belief that we all have an obligation to help others if we are in a position to do so. Thankfully, given the privileged position I found myself in, and the terrific support system I had, I was afforded an opportunity to provide someone with a donated organ, and I took it.
How did your decision to donate impact your life?
My organ donation has impacted my life in a multitude of ways. It has given me the incredible chance to help someone in need. It has humbled me and provided me a broader understanding of what those who need donations go through before their surgery. And it has allowed me to reinforce my commitment to working to help others.
What should others curious about living donation know?
You do not have to go through the donation process alone. There are so many resources—your entire surgery team, your nurse practitioner, your surgical coordinator, your healthcare advocate, and many external resources—that you can lean on. Do not hesitate to do so. Remember that this is a major operation and everyone involved wants to make sure that you feel safe, confident, and comfortable with your decision to donate.
How was your surgery and recovery?
My surgery and recovery went great! Everyone's experience will differ, but the entire process felt very manageable and controlled. On top of all that, my surgery team was with me every step of the way to monitor my recovery and answer any questions I had.
How was your quality of life after donation?
My quality of life post donation has been terrific. My recovery went very smoothly, and I have completely resumed my typical routines. I have not experienced any limitations or lingering issues as a result of my donation.
